Garage Door Systems



This project developed through a then LEDU (Now Invest Northern Ireland) funded programme. The company owners, Peter and John Doherty, came from a farming and meat processing background and participated on the Business Formation Programme, which IBI delivered for LEDU.



The Doherty brothers wished to diversify from the agricultural industry and had identified the developing housing market in Ireland as an opportunity for a new business venture. IBI carried out a search in this area and following evaluation of a number of products, settled on a USA company who manufactured a wide range of domestic garage doors, both manual and electrified.



John Doherty said "initial research by IBI Ltd established that the Irish garage door market was mainly serviced by imported product so Peter and I therefore visited the company headquarters in Texas to see the manufacturing process and discuss a licensing arrangement. The service offered by IBI Ltd was very smooth and well documented as this concept was very new to us."

On return, a new company, Garage Door Systems Limited, was formed to take the business forward. IBI Ltd prepared a business plan and the company set up a manufacturing unit in Ballymena. The business now employs 45 workers and has more than 150 distributors in Ireland and throughout Great Britain.

The business will shortly relocate in it's own purpose built 30,000 square ft. factory in Ballymena.
